Meet Frederick, a devoted father whose unwavering love for his daughter Ka’maya has guided him through a challenging and transformative journey. Originally from Florida, Frederick’s life took an unexpected turn when he learned that the mother of his child, living in California, was struggling with substance abuse and a mental disorder. This led to the intervention of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and Frederick was faced with a heart-wrenching decision: either come get his daughter or she would go into foster care.

Without hesitation, Frederick drove across the country to California. Upon arrival, he went straight to the hospital where his daughter was. With nowhere else to go, he found refuge at Thomas House, referred to him by his Catholic church. Despite the initial challenge of the mother’s refusal for a necessary body scan for her daughter, which opened a case, Frederick’s determination to provide a safe and stable environment for his daughter never wavered.

Finding Relief at Thomas House

When Frederick first arrived at Thomas House, he felt an overwhelming sense of relief. He knew that the program would provide the support and stability he desperately needed for himself and Ka’maya. The housing navigation services were crucial in managing the high costs of living, while the emotional support and comprehensive resources offered by Thomas House empowered him to succeed. He aimed to organize his life and create a nurturing environment for his daughter, secure stable childcare, save his income and become financially independent, and obtain permanent housing. His journey was filled with memorable moments, particularly Christmas at Thomas House. The joy and generosity of the season brought him back to his own childhood, and seeing Ka’maya’s face light up with happiness made him realize she deserved every bit of that magic.

The services provided at Thomas House had a profound impact on Frederick’s parenting abilities. It uplifted his skills, boosting his confidence and knowledge. He learned valuable lessons about what to watch out for and how to nurture his daughter’s growth. Fatherhood has humbled Frederick and taught him patience, reinforcing the importance of making thoughtful decisions. He is committed to teaching Ka’maya to “Love God and lean on Him for everything.”

Since joining the program, Frederick has accomplished significant goals. He has learned to budget and save money consistently, creating an emergency savings fund. Securing permanent housing for himself and his daughter was a milestone, alongside finding stable childcare. Frederick also gained full custody of his daughter, maintained steady employment, and reconnected with family. His organizational and stress management skills and parenting skills have greatly improved, making him a more effective and loving father.
