Before my family and I found refuge at Thomas House Family Shelter, we were facing significant challenges. We struggled to make ends meet and pay rent, which led to the hardships of unstable housing and financial uncertainty. The situation was further complicated when individuals we considered friends contributed to our eviction from our rented room.
In the midst of these challenging circumstances, my father, who worked at restaurants, did everything he could to provide for our family, even bringing home food to ensure we were well-fed. Meanwhile, my mother tirelessly sought a solution, visiting Thomas House Family Shelter regularly, rain or shine, in the hope of securing a vacant apartment for our family. Her persistence and determination paid off when we were finally able to move into one of Thomas House’s available units.
Early Memories: Finding Community and Support
As a child at Thomas House, my family and I formed strong bonds with other families facing similar struggles. Memories of shared meals, laughter, and support are cherished, with the shelter providing not only a safe place to stay but also a community that became like family. My mother ran a daycare, creating lasting connections with other families and children. I fondly recall spending joyful days at Mile Square Park with my father, enjoying carne asada and quality family time.
Impact of Thomas House on My Journey
My experiences at Thomas House shaped my understanding of community and support. Though I didn’t fully grasp the extent of the support at the time, I now appreciate how Thomas House influenced me and my family. The after-school program provided me with academic support, mentorship, and opportunities to explore the world beyond the shelter.
Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience
The challenges my family faced before arriving at Thomas House taught me the importance of perseverance and maintaining hope even in trying times. Thomas House provided us with a safe and supportive environment, which enabled me to grow and thrive.
Education and Career Path: Giving Back to the Community
My journey continued with my pursuit of education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a Master’s degree in Social Work. I now work in the biotechnology and mental health fields, using my expertise to give back to the community and support those in need. As a Clinical Support Supervisor and Senior Outreach Specialist, I continue to help individuals facing significant challenges.
Becoming a Board Member and Inspiring Change
My dedication to Thomas House and its mission led me to become a board member, where I contribute my firsthand experience and insight. My unique perspective as a resident allows me to provide valuable input in strategic planning and development. I take pride in being part of a group dedicated to supporting families and providing the resources needed for a brighter future.
Vision for the Future: Supporting Families in Need
I envision a future where Thomas House continues to improve and expand its services, particularly in mental health and therapy. I advise current families in the program to embrace their journey and recognize that their situation is temporary, with brighter days ahead.
A Message of Hope and Gratitude
Looking back, I express deep gratitude to my parents for their love and resilience in seeking support for our family. I hope to continue supporting Thomas House by raising awareness of homelessness and sharing my story.
